August 5, 2010

Registration begins August 20 at 6:00p.m. in the Dining Hall

This is the second Ordeal of the year. This is the first weekend held right after Summer Camp is over. The Brothers of the Lodge tear down camp and prepare it for winter.

Candidates for the Order of the Arrow can take their Ordeal this weekend and Ordeal members who have been Ordeal for 10 months are encouraged to take their Brotherhood this weekend as well.

Nominations and Elections for Lodge and Chapter Officers as well as selecting the two Founders Award recipients are taken Sunday during the meetings.

Brotherhood Requirements

May 17, 2010

Have you been an Ordeal Member for at least 10 months?

If so, you are able to seal your membership in the Order of the Arrow by taking your Brotherhood at the next Ordeal weekend.

In order to obtain the Brotherhood Honor, an Ordeal member must complete the following requirements:

    • Memorize the Obligation, the Admonition, and the Song of the Ordeal (all of which can be found in your Order of the Arrow Handbook)
    • Have the Ordeal membership for a period of at least ten (10) months
    • Write a letter to the Brotherhood Committee that explains what you think the Obligation means to you and also how becoming a Brotherhood member will help you help the Lodge. (This letter doesn’t have to be long, just close to a page in length [bring this letter to the Ordeal])
    • Carve a walking stick that is a minimum of three feet in length. Carve on the stick: your name, “WWW,” and “Monaken 103” on it. (Be sure to bring this along to the Ordeal.)
    • Complete the Brotherhood hike as well as the Brotherhood ceremony at the Ordeal. (This will be completed at the Ordeal.)
    • Have current dues paid

If you have any questions about taking the Brotherhood Ordeal, please contact the Brotherhood Chairman, Adviser, or Lodge Second vice Chief.

Interested in helping with the Brotherhood Hike?

The Brotherhood Committee is actively looking for Brotherhood or Vigil members to help out Friday evenings at each Ordeal with the Brotherhood Hike. The hike will start around 7:30pm.

Please contact the Brotherhood Chairman, Adviser, or Lodge Second vice Chief.

2010 Vigil List Announced

May 11, 2010

The Vigil Committee has announced the 2010 Monaken Lodge Vigil List. You can view the updated Vigil List here (update May 18, 2010)

The Vigil Honor (from the National Order of the Arrow):

Alertness to the needs of others is the mark of the Vigil Honor. It calls for an individual with an unusual awareness of the possibilities within each situation.

The Vigil Honor is the highest honor that the Order of the Arrow can bestow upon its members for service to lodge, council, and Scouting. Membership cannot be won by a person’s conscious endeavors.

The Vigil Honor is a high mark of distinction and recognition reserved for those Arrowmen who, by reason of exceptional service, personal effort, and unselfish interest, have made distinguished contributions beyond the immediate responsibilities of their position of office to one or more of the following:

  • Lodge
  • Order of the Arrow
  • Scouting community
  • Scout Camp

Under NO circumstances should tenure in Scouting or the Order of the Arrow be considered as reason enough for a Vigil Honor recommendation.

Any member of the Order of the Arrow registered in Scouting and in good standing in a regularly chartered lodge is eligible for recommendation to the National Order of the Arrow Committee for elevation to the Vigil Honor provided that, at the time of the recommendation, the individual has been a Brotherhood member for a minimum of two years. A lodge may nominate a maximum of two percent of their registered Arrowmen once a year, through the Vigil Honor petition, found in the annual re-charter packet. At least 50 percent of all nominated must be under 21 at the time of nomination.

Any Vigil Brother who wishes to write a letter should submit it no later than Friday, May 21 to either:

Mike DePasquale – squaly23@gmail.com
Brad Strigle – strglebjs@gmail.com

Any corrections to the list should be submitted to both Mike and Brad at the email address above no later than May 18.

2009 Woodchuck Make Up to be at Spring Ordeal

March 7, 2010

Candidates for the Order of the Arrow who were planning on taking their Ordeal at the 2009 Woodchuck Weekend will have their opportunity extended to the Spring Ordeal May 21-23 at Seven Mountains Scout Camp.

The 2009 Woodchuck Ordeal was canceled due to a heavy snow storm that made working conditions at Camp extremely unsafe (http://monakennews.wordpress.com/2009/10/15/woodchuck-weather-update/). Candidates for the OA and Ordeal members wishing to take their Brotherhood Ordeal that weekend were unable to do so.

The cost to take the Ordeal will be $33.00 if registered online or by calling the Council Office at (717) 667-9236 by May 17. After May 17, the cost of registration increases to $36.00. If you fail to complete your Ordeal at the Spring Ordeal you will have to be voted again by your Unit in 2011.

Ordeal members who were planning on taking their Brotherhood Ordeal are encouraged to complete the Brotherhood Ordeal at the Spring Ordeal in May. The cost for registration is $27.00 (which is the cost of your sash and food for the weekend) if registered by May 17. After May 17, the cost of registration increases to $30.00.

Candidates chosen in 2010 are unaffected by this and have the opportunity to take their Ordeal in the Spring, Fall, or at the Woodchuck Weekend. If you have any questions, please contact Tim McClure, Lodge Staff Adviser, at (717) 667-9236.

Conclave 2010 Service Days

February 23, 2010

Monaken Lodge will be sponsoring six service days in preparation of the 2010 Conclave at Seven Mountains Scout Camp. Two will be during regular Lodge weekends and the additional two will be held during special weekends.

  • Chapter Weekend – April 24: 8:00am – 4:00pm
  • April 25: 10:00am
  • May 8: 8:00am – 4:00pm
  • Spring Ordeal – May 22: 8:00am – 4:00pm
  • June 5: 8:00am – 4:00pm

Lunch will be provided to all those that register for the event. More information (including registering for the events) can be found at www.monaken.org

As a special incentive for Brothers to attend each service day, the Conclave Committee has created a special collectors patch set with each piece of the set being available at its corresponding weekend. Only those in attendance at the event will be able to purchase one patch. The cost of each patch will be announced on www.conclave2010.com and www.monaken.org.

**updated February 23, 2010

*The April 25 Service Day

After many requests from Brothers about Service Days being scheduled during a Unit event, the Conclave Committee scheduled an additional Service Day (April 25) starting at 10:00am at Camp. Brothers who are unable to attend a Service Day (either April 24, May 8, May 22, or June 5) and still wish to purchase that piece of the “Woodrow 5-piece Patch Set” that they would have missed they can attend the April 25 Service Day. Those Brothers who attend the April 25 Service Day will be able to collect the patch at the 2010 Conclave June 11.

As an incentive for Brothers, if you attend this Service Day along with the 5 other Service Days, you will be able to enter into the lottery 5 times (as explained below).

The Lottery

The lottery will now take place at the Section Conclave June 11-13 at Seven Mountains Scout Camp. Lotteries will not take place at the individual events.

  • If you attend 5 of the Service Days + Conclave, you will have one chance to enter the silent lottery system
  • If you attend all 6 of the Service Days + Conclave, you will have five chances to enter the silent lottery system
